River Commons

Chicago is a node in a larger geography of flows, with the Chicago River as one of its most visible conduits. Since the mid-19th century,  the river has been canalized, dredged, expanded, and ultimately reversed to shape the flow of resources, labor, and opportunity that defined the city’s economic life. Centuries of industrial use left the river with a reputation as an open sewer, but in 2016, the city announced a goal for Chicago’s rivers to become “inviting, productive and living” by 2040. Today, the river is regularly monitored, and its improving water quality has made river swimming events possible. Ten years after the city announced its goal, River Commons extends this vision by combining a river water treatment facility with public gathering places.

“…a concrete slab along the North Branch River Channel becomes a place of learning and leisure that interacts with the river as both a historical and living being. In this work, one finds enduring human connections and a Chicago that welcomes.”

– Kate Wagner, Architecture Critic for The Nation

By reclaiming Chicago’s legacy of river training—guiding flows, constructing thresholds, and shaping edges—the project weaves river water and people along the shoreline to create a riparian habitat with public access along, in, and on the river. The intersecting walkways and topography is heightened within a 700-foot long building, where different forms of gathering, ritual, and recreation tied to the river meet in one shared public frame. At the same time, the building acts as a pumping and filtration spine, cleaning surrounding rainwater runoff as well as the river itself, so that all Chicagoans, new and old, can enjoy the river downstream.
